'My aunt died of influenza - so they said, but it’s my belief they done the old woman in... Yes, Lord love you. Why should she die of influenza when she come through diptheria right enough the year before? Fairly blue with it, she was. They all thought she was dead, but my father, he kept ladling gin down her throat... Then she come to so sudden she bit the bowl off the spoon... Now what call would a woman with that strength in her have to die of influenza? And what become of her new straw hat that should have come to me? Somebody pinched it, and what I say is, them as pinched it done her in... Them she lived with would have killed her for a hat pin, let alone a hat...’ This exact bit in the Ascot scene of “My Fair Lady” (1964) made me laugh out loud the first time I saw it over 10 years ago, and just as much last weekend when we watched it again at home. Audrey’s solemn expression as she goes on and on (and slowly, too) about her suspicions and the straw hat is perfect haha :’) Xo

I’ve never seen, nor wanted to see, this version, even though I adored ‘sexy Rexy’. I never have seen any reason to redo what Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard did so well in Pygmalion.
ReplyDeleteThanks to you, I am concerned that I'll never get 'sexy Rexy' out of my head next time I see that lovable actor hahaha - but as someone who isn't the biggest Hepburn fan, I know what you mean! If you ever changed your mind though and wanted to see another take on Pygmalion, you can't get better than this as far as musical productions go, it's beautiful to watch and listen to! I'd love to know, do you like the Major Barbara film? I thought it such an exhilirating/thought-provoking watch (not least because of Wendy and Rexy hehe) Thank you so much for stopping by the blog :)) Xo
