Comfort and 'George & the Dragon'

A particularly cheering series that can melt away mildly, vaguely damp feelings like hot water bottles for childhood tummy aches - too specific again, I know - is "George & The Dragon" (1968) by classic sitcom writers Vince Powell and Harry Driver. Have you ever seen it? It stars my beloved Sid James and Peggy Mount together with my also beloved John Le Mesurier and Keith Marsh, as they work in the residence of Colonel Maynard (Le Mesurier), with the battleaxe housekeeper (Peggy, who else) and lecherous chauffeur (Sid, who else) generally locking horns and one-upping each other, though deep down they're all one loveable odd family.

It's not scintillatingly intellectual or unique or anything, but it's full of really good jokes, funny plots with entertaining dialogue, finely performed stage timing and delivery, which is reflected in the audience's often riotous laughter. Best of all for me, and a big part of why I love the series, is the cast's joyful performances, and (as you'll see in the last picture) a sense that the four genuinely, immensely enjoy their time on the show and performing together, and so of course, so do you Xo
