I've realised with some happy disbelief that there are over 100 followers on this page, and I'm humbly amazed that so many people would tolerate my being on their pages, let alone the many of you lovely people who actually like my posts and leave the loveliest comments. In the real world my love for ordinary/not-so-ordinary vintage film/television is a mostly lonely one haha, so I always light up to find my new friends among you, someone else loves what I love, or thinks it's worth a try. So thank you!! :') And in the spirit of friendship and gratitude, what better televised comfort to share than 'Something Nice for Sol' the original pilot from "Car 54, Where Are You?" (1961) when Toody and Muldoon try to surprise Sergeant Abrams with a pair of custom-made orthopaedic shoes to relieve his pained feet (central joke: without him knowing a thing about it). But Abrams is worried that the police force will use his upcoming 25th anniversary to dismiss him instead, paving the way (of course) for a lovely sentimental surprise of friendship and brotherly love. Not before Toody and Muldoon have to knock him out in his own bed so that the orthopaedist (the delightful Gerald Hiken) can make the plaster casts, haha.
As a show pilot, it's also a joy to see the way the downtown, lovingly worn station and precinct are painted full of Nat Hiken's typically Runyonesque characters and affectionately diverse ethnic landscape, a humble stage to meet the salt of the earth, jubilantly baroque-shaped and soft, bruised or mended in places but deeply, stubbornly kind Xo
