Star Trek's Mop-Headed 'Devil in the Dark'

Some scenes from another favourite TOS episode, "Star Trek: The Devil in the Dark," where Kirk and his team discover a new species, Spock memorably performs an unusual Vulcan mind-meld, and (for those of us who can easily suspend belief when watching vintage science fiction) we are introduced to a terrifying alien portrayed by a man aggressively squirming around under a mop-edged rock.

This episode doesn't have the dreamy luminous hues of many others in the series, but the closeness of the slate blue tunnels, the riot of coloured uniforms, and the pearly silicon eggs make an impression. I think I love this episode because it embodies the essence of creator Gene Roddenberry's fiercely, nobly naive reason to create such a series, "to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms. […] If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there."
