Day 6: Film with Great Jokes
My easy nomination would have to be “The Diamond Arm” or Бриллиантовая
рука (1969), so full of lightning sight gags, hilarious slapstick, absurd
songs, and eternally quotable lines that it’s a marvel the story proceeds at
all, and at an equally sparkling chaotic pace at that. This is probably Leonid
Gaidai’s fourth-most talkative film (otherwise they tend to lean towards the
Chaplinesque), and it has some amazing lines that are still oft-quoted today,
holy fool Mel Brooks style, playfully poking a little fun at the serious and
not-so-serious things in life. Some of my favourites are the hero’s confession:
‘I’m not a coward but I’m scared,’ and a scene where the policemen trying to
solve this smuggling racket have a mind-reading conversation without saying
anything at all haha. An excellent choice to lift the spirits c: Xo
