Day 20: Film with Great Silliness
I think by now I’ve been more than generous in sharing my love for “A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” (1966), but in my
Lester-Gaidai-(Gerald) Thomas trinity (honorary Funès mention), it’s the
perfect choice for this one. It has all the joyfully manic, free-wheeling
tongue-in-cheek effervescence of Lester’s Beatles movies with the surreal,
colourful interpretation of a classic Roman farce. And farce is right - nothing
is taken seriously or tragically - not only that, any and every silly joke and
gag is used, bordering on the non sequitur and nonsense (all the reasons
comedies are rarely on respectable film critic lists and all the reasons they
should be), but all beautifully assembled and choreographed to be a genuine
delight :’) Xo
